Action luis in de pels

Action is een ware luis in de pels van menig winkelketen. Winkels die de afgelopen tijd in grote problemen kwamen, noemden steevast dezelfde oorzaken: de economische crisis, de opkomst van internet en oprukkende lowbudgetzaken als Action en Primark.

De liberaal onder ons zegt dan: “so what”. Als consumenten daar willen kopen dan heeft action daar rechtmatig voordeel van. De schuldige is dus niet Action of Primark, maar de consument. Echter, als er overal Coca Cola te koop is en geen Pepsi, dan gaan mensen meer Coca Cola kopen dan Pepsi. Met andere woorden, het aanbod stuurt de vraag. De consument alleen de schuld geven is dus niet terecht.

Action als distributie outlet van China

Wie dan ook de schuld mag hebben is in feite helemaal niet interessant. Waar het omgaat is dat Action niet alleen maar een leuke low budget winkel is waar je ‘goedkoop spullen kan kopen’. Action is niet meer dan een distributie outlet voor China. Dus als je bij Action koopt, steun je China. Alle spullen die in China worden gemaakt, ontworpen en winstmarge op wordt gemaakt, heeft China pofijt van. Met andere woorden: er vind een overdracht van geld plaats naar China in ruil voor bepaald soort spullen:

  • China maakt gebruik van kinderarbeid. Kinderen werken mee, al dan niet gratis wat de kosten drukt. Het bekende tijdschrift Linda schrijft over het gebruik van kinderarbeid.
  • Valutamanipulatie: door de Chinese valuta kunstmatig laag te houden worden exportproducten goedkoper en tegelijkertijd worden importgoederen juist duurder. Hierdoor kan China meer exporteren en juist minder importeren.
  • Veronachtzaming van het milieu. In het westen zijn dure regels ten aanzien van het milieu wat de kostprijs van een product hoger maakt. De Chinese concurrent heeft dit niet waardoor zijn product goedkoper is.
  • Slechte kwaliteit. Voor de slechte kwaliteit die de Action verkoopt bestaat er zelfs een heus forum. Slechte kwaliteit betekent een slechte koop voor de consument maar ook dat goederen buitensporig snel op de vuilstort terecht komen.
  • Exportsubsidies. Voor veel producten bestaan er in China exportsubsidies wat het Chinese product nog goedkoper maakt.
  • Veiligheidsvoorschriften. In het westen bestaan allerlei voorschriften (ARBO wet) waaraan een bedrijf moet voldoen. Dit is goed voor het personeel maar kosten verhogend. Ook hier heeft China een competitief voordeel.
  • Op straffe van het vormen van een vakbond (of ondernemingsraad) staat gevangenisstraf.
  • Dwangarbeiderskampen. China maakt veelvuldig gebruik van gevangenissen die vrijwel gratis producten maken die ook worden geëxporteerd. Het bekendste voorbeeld zijn de kampen waarin de Oeigoeren dwangarbeid verrichten.
  • Namaak en stelen van auteursrechten. China staat in de tussentijd bekend om het stelen van bedrijfsgeheimen. Veel geld wordt door bedrijven geïnvesteerd in nieuwe technologieën die dan door China gratis en voor niets worden nagemaakt of gestolen
  • Leveranciers en werknemers afknijpen. In een artikel van de quote maakt Action zichzelf ook niet druk om haar leveranciers of werknemers

China is niet alleen een valsspeler, buitenlandse bedrijven worden actief geweerd uit China. Zelf heeft auteur geprobeerd goederen te verkopen in China maar dat is vrijwel onmogelijk. Alle internet is afgesloten, er moet gebruik worden gemaakt van een lokale partner waardoor competitief voordeel in feite meteen weg is. Anderzijds mag China wel direct verkopen in het Westen:

De lage prijs heeft dus een hoge kost. De auteur is zelf eigenaar van een outlet van goederen (hout en granen uit Zuid Amerika) en de enige reden waarom consumenten niet direct bij een fabriek in Zuid Amerika kopen is:

  • Risico: het is riskant veel geld naar de andere kant van de wereld te sturen
  • Hoeveelheid: de klant wilt graag een kleine hoeveelheid terwijl een goedkoop transport alleen met een grote hoeveelheid samen gaat.

Dit is dus de rol (toegevoegde waarde) van een importeur: risico op zich nemen en hoeveelheid verdelen. Ketens zoals Action en Primark is slechts een eerste stap. De volgende stap is dat China (in de vorm van Alibaba.com) in het afzetland zelf een outlet opzet. Zo is Alibaba reeds stevig aan het investeren in een groot distributie centrum. Dan wordt zelfs de Action en Primark in de distributieketen overgeslagen. Hoe meer schakels in de distributieketen worden overgeslagen hoe lager de prijs. De lokale bedrijven zullen op termijn verdwijnen. Dit is ook gebeurd met de medicijnen productie die nu voor 90% (negentig procent!) in China plaats vind. Met een China Outlet is het Nederlandse volk  verder gereduceerd tot koopslaaf van de lage prijs. Het individuele gewin gaat boven het collectieve belang.

En het zijn juist de mensen die bij winkels zoals Action kopen die ook als eerst werkeloos raken.
